Day 51
Published:
Topping yesterday, today was my first 25 mile day in the Sierra. We started the ascent to Muir Pass at 4 and were up there by 6:15. The climb up was mostly snowbound and mostly easy because of the low grade, so I was really able to enjoy the stunning surroundings. On the way up Sled Dog, Dumpster, Jojo, Bandit, Mikey, and ??? caught up to us and we hiked together intermittently for the rest of the ascent, with us shooting ahead and them finding a shortcut to catch us. We reached the pass together and hung out for a while in the cool Muir hut.
I may have received a trail name I like at the hut from Bandit: Assless Chaps, or just Chaps. Here’s why:
The descent down Muir is famously long, sixteen miles to the low point before the subsequent Selden Pass. Only the first five miles were supposed to be snow covered, so we cooked it downhill hoping to beat the slush. We mostly managed to do so, with only sporadic postholing until the last mile or so.
The descent through Evolution Valley was pretty and uneventful: I felt strong and I walked fast. The crossing of Evolution Creek was very easy, contrary to popular myth about early-season conditions. We briefly lunched on the banks and marched forward to squeeze a few more miles out of the day. This stretch was mostly along the beautiful South Fork of the San Joaquin River, but despite the adjacent cold water, the low elevation (~8,000 feet) and lack of shade made it Hot. It felt like a return to the desert. When we returned to forest, ostensibly by God’s grace, we were greeted by our first hordes of mosquitoes. Not fun. This caused Roadrunner and I to stop half a mile short of the camp where everyone was headed in favor of a windy ridge at Mile 859.8. Great day, hopefully setting me up for another big one to get to Vermillion Valley Ranch before they close.
